February 17th, 2025
As previously announced, our source (observed) server policy means that from time to time we may add or remove a server as it becomes eligible or ineligible to be an observed server, or an eligible server enables or disables public access to their denylist.
CARIAD is intended to be a reflection of the blocks in place on the largest servers, and as monthly active user counts go up and down, servers may move in or out of eligibility.
This update will remove one server and add three, and will represent the blocks in place on the servers that collectively host 56% of all Mastodon accounts. The update will take place on Wednesday February 19 (2025-02-19) at 1400 UTC.
If any of the changes below are of concern, disable your FediCheck subscription until the update is complete and you can review the new lists.
In total we track over 74,000 historical federating domains, and roughly 2,000 are represented in the data we see on the observed servers. No domain is collectively blocked by all our observed sources.
This action adds and removes some domains, based on the collective actions taken by the observed servers. This may be because the new mix of observed servers do not collectively block the domain, or they have removed inactive domains, or the observed servers are exhibiting more or less blocking activity.
There are 21 domains that are newly eligible to be sent to your server (including threads[.]net), 14 that are removed, and 28 that are now blocked by fewer servers than previously and therefore may fall below your chosen agreement setting. Of the 14 removed, unless IFTAS is able to individually review the content, the domain is not eligible for DNI or other method to ensure longevity of the block. We will monitor these domains, and should they become re-eligible they will be re-added.
If you are a FediCheck CARIAD user and you have selected automated updates based on either 51%, 66% or 80% agreement, some domains will be added or removed by FediCheck.
This post will describe the changes observed and may highlight specific actions you may want to take on individual domains. To preserve a block, simply choose “unmanage this domain” and this will stop FediCheck from making any changes or retractions for a given domain.
Please note, many of these domains may expose you to privacy concerns, illegal or undesirable content, or other inauthentic content and behaviour. Please exercise caution if you choose to visit these domains, and make use of standard investigation tooling before visiting in an unprotected browser.
Domains that are now blocked by at least 51% of observed servers. If your subscription includes domains blocked by 51% or more servers, FediCheck CARIAD will add these domains to your denylist. (If your subscription is for 66% or 80% agreement, these domains will not be added).
