Multiple, fake accounts used to create an illusion of consensus or popularity, such as by liking or reposting content in order to amplify it.
Background
Sock puppet accounts are often used to help quickly spread Disinformation, often in concert with Cross Platform Abuse, to fabricate popularity of a post or profile. They can often be malicious bots. They are sometimes used as block or ban evasion methods, to circumvent account restrictions placed on the sock puppet’s primary account. Businesses may use sock puppet accounts to post favourable reviews or replies about their product or service.
Comparing account IP addresses is one way to monitor multiple accounts from a single source, but this is easily avoided by a concerted sock puppet creator.
Researchers and OSINT actors often create sock puppet accounts to gather data, using guidance on avoiding detection. Nation state actors employ sock puppet methods to attempt to sway public opinion.
Sock Puppet accounts may stray into Impersonation. Using sock puppet accounts is generally considered unethical.
Example Rule
The use of use alternative “sock puppet” accounts to mislead, deceive, disrupt, or create the illusion of support is prohibited.
