Why Should I Have A Federation Policy?

From the IFTAS Trust & Safety Library - supporting volunteer moderators in the Fediverse

If you’re running a Fediverse server, you’ve maybe heard people talk about “federation policies.” But what exactly are they, and why do they matter?

A federation policy is simply your server’s set of rules or decisions about which other servers (or domains) it connects with – and which ones it doesn’t. Think of it as your community’s guest list. It helps you decide who’s welcome, who isn’t, and what kind of interactions you want to foster. Here’s why having one really matters:

Build Trust and Keep Your Community Safe

Having a federation policy helps you protect your space. You can block domains known for spam, harassment, hate speech, or other harmful behaviour. This creates a safer environment for your users, especially those from marginalised or underserved groups who often bear the brunt of online abuse.

Stay in Control of the Content You Host

Not every server shares the same values or standards. A clear policy lets you shape the kind of content that appears on your server, helping you maintain the tone and purpose of your community – whether it’s a cosy art space, a tech discussion hub, or a queer support network.

Cut Down on the Noise

By choosing not to federate with chaotic or irrelevant servers, you keep your member’s timelines cleaner and more focused. That makes it easier for your users to find meaningful content and connect with others who share their interests.

Nurture the Community Culture You Want

Federation policies give you the tools to grow your server’s unique identity. Want to connect with other feminist servers? Or block those that promote disinformation? You can. It’s about building a network of communities that support your values.

Encourage Broader Perspectives, Not Echo Chambers

At first glance, limiting who you federate with might sound like closing yourself off. But done thoughtfully, a federation policy can actually help diversify the conversations your users see. The goal is quality, not quantity – connecting with communities that bring constructive, varied voices into the mix.

It Shows You’re Prepared – and Helps During Tough Moments

One of the often-overlooked benefits of a federation policy is what it communicates to your community and peers: that your team has thought seriously about moderation, safety, and how your server fits into the broader Fediverse. This becomes especially important during times of high visibility – say, when a controversial server starts getting attention, or your server experiences a sudden spike in new users. With a federation policy already in place, you don’t have to scramble to react. You can point to your public stance, explain your reasoning, and take action quickly and transparently. It’s not just about having rules – it’s about showing your community that you care, you’re paying attention, and you’ve got a plan.

Every server is different, and your federation policy should reflect your community’s values, goals, and capacity. But no matter your size or focus, having one is a proactive step toward building a safe, resilient, and inclusive space on the Fediverse. If you’re not sure where to start, IFTAS offers template guidance, and peer support to help you build a federation policy that works for your community.
