Definition

The fraudulent practice of sending emails or other messages purporting to be from reputable sources in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

Background

Phishing is a deceptive practice where individuals are tricked into revealing personal or sensitive information through fraudulent communications. These often appear as legitimate requests from trusted entities, possibly masking as the social media platform itself. Phishing attempts can occur social media or direct messages, and frequently direct victims to fake websites that mimic real ones. The objective is to steal login credentials or other personal data for malicious purposes.
